College and Career Day 2015
We are planning Charlotte Wood’s 10th Annual Career Day which will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015.
Charlotte Wood Middle School feels that career exploration and awareness is a valuable tool in helping students uncover the possibilities that await them in high school, college and beyond. Studies show that at-risk students who are involved in career exploration and awareness activities at the middle school level are more likely to establish an effective program plan of study for high school, thus better preparing them for their future career selections. Your involvement in the lives of our students, even if for a small amount of time, will make a difference in at least one student’s life.
Please take a moment and consider whether you or someone you know would like to participate in Career Day this year. If you are interested confirm your place by completing registration in the link below.

Free the Children
CWMS Leadership has decided to Adopt a Village in Kenya. We will be working with Free the Children, the world’s largest organization of kids helping kids. If you would like to donate online or buy a family a gift such as a goat, a bundle of chicks, school supplies, etc. Once you donate, please make sure to select “Make a school donation” and write Charlotte Wood Middle School where it asks for the school name. This will ensure that the funds go to our village and it will help us to track the donations for our goal to raise $10,000 this school year for our village. There's more options on the website. See below for link and details.

*Attention parents! The CWMS yearbook was not included in the registration process. There is a separate online store where you can purchase the book. Please search for your child's name before trying to manually enter it yourself. We have uploaded all of the registered students as of September 20th.
So far we have only sold 538 books and we have over 1000 students at our school, so roughly 462 students still do not have a yearbook reserved/purchased.
If you aren’t sure whether you have ordered or not, you will have a confirmation email and an account set up through the yearbook order center link previously listed, please do not email the yearbook teacher asking if you have purchased a book, you will have an email receipt for it if you purchased one. We will be sending out a reminder to those who have not purchased soon.

Parent Tutors Needed
Charlotte Wood Middle School is in need of community members to volunteer to tutor in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) class. AVID is a nationwide college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in and complete a degree at a four year college or university. Tutors are not teachers, but they guide students in their thinking and help them discover their own answers. We are in need of tutors for Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the school year. You can volunteer one or both days, one or both semesters.
Volunteers are the lifeline of AVID’s tutoring program and your child doesn’t need to be in AVID class in order for you to help. Please contact Assistant Principal Debra Petish at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Thanks for your support!
Instructional Calendar Change
There will be a slight change to the instructional calendar for 14-15. The dates of 9/26/14 and 2/13/15 will be minimum days. A detailed schedule will be available soon.
IMPORTANT: SRVUSD Implements New Volunteer Requirements
SRVUSD is implementing a new system for all adults who wish to volunteer on a school campus or drive/chaperone day and overnight field trips and athletic events. This new Volunteer Management System features a web-based software application that allows the District and all schools to better track and provide the appropriate level of clearance for school volunteers.
The District will NOT be asking parents to incur any of the costs associated with these clearance processes, and if you have already been fingerprinted for the purposes of volunteering in our schools, we will not ask you to do that again!
The new SRVUSD Volunteer Management System includes three (3) levels of volunteer clearance and tracking: 1) Classroom aides and other general school volunteers; 2) field trip drivers, and 3) overnight chaperones. During the online application process, you will be asked to choose the level or levels of clearance you will need based on your anticipated involvement.
ALL adult volunteers will need to go through this new process. For more information, and to begin the application process, scan the QR code, or click http://www.srvusd.net/parents/volunteers to be redirected to the district's website for more information on the new volunteer requirements.
